How many Detroiters are left? 10-10-10

It has been about one year since I "left" the Detroit area to tough it out in sunny Sarasota, Florida. Winter is fast approaching. I  have been searching the Census Bureau's statistics to see if they will venture a guess as to how many residents officially remain in Detroit. The ex-Mayor, Kwame Kilpatrick, remains in jail, and with the new charges pending looks like he will be a guest of the Feds for a very long time. Dave Bing is the new mayor, but his job reminds me of the saying "Like rearranging the deck chairs on the Titantic." As some of my readers know, Detroit's maximum population was about 2 million people in 1950. Everyone agrees it is now well under 1 million. But just how far under 1 million has it fallen? 800,000 is a figure that is commonly cited. Prior to moving to Sarasota, I was doing far more work as a Private Investigator than I would have cared to do. Nearly half of this work was in the city of Detroit. It was usually depressing. It was not fun. I had more than one gun at hand and am jumpy by nature, so I will not claim that I felt as though I was in any danger. One thing I am sure of, however. It was never crowded. There were no traffic jams...no busy sidewalks. People did not mill about in the areas I was in. Perhaps one of my readers can find an official, current census statistic. Until then, what is the current population of the city of Detroit? Is it now down to 750,000? Or is it, as I suspect, down below 700,000? Perhaps the real number is closer to 680,000? We shall soon see.
